CMF

Rebecca Goesling

This course explores how culture shapes design through trend research, color theory, materials, form, and storytelling—all within one extended project. You’ll engage in conversations, create, and hear from industry experts. Ideal for curious students who connect history to the future, you’ll need a way to visualize ideas (like Illustrator, Photoshop, or sketching). Research or visualization experience helps, but an eagerness to engage matters most.

Schedule

Monday & Thursday
2:30PM–4PM CST

Learning Outcomes

  • Analyze cultural trends to inform design decisions related to product development, consumer behavior, and storytelling.

  • Apply color theory, material knowledge, and finish selection to effectively communicate design intent and emotional impact.

  • Demonstrate an understanding of visual storytelling by integrating form, material, and context into a cohesive narrative.

  • Research and interpret historical and contemporary cultural events to identify their influence on design practices and user preferences.
  • Engage in critical dialogue with peers and industry professionals, offering and receiving feedback to refine design thinking and outcomes.

  • Develop a single extended design project that evolves based on trend analysis, cultural research, and iterative feedback.

  • Show curiosity and initiative in connecting design with broader cultural, historical, and future-facing insights.
